Dortmund
Dortmund is where some of Germany's most important hi-tech companies are located, which makes the city one of Germany's most important cities. The local government has big plans to turn the city into one if not the IT centre of Europe by reclaiming the old ports of Dortmund especially for the industry. Dortmund is probably best known to football fans as the home of Borussia Dortmund.
Getting there
By air
Almost all major European cities provide air service to Dortmund airport (DTM). There, a train to Dortmund's Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) takes about 36 minutes and runs every 30 minutes.
If you can't make a direct flight, other nearby cities include Frankfurt (about 90 minutes by train) or Dusseldorf.
By rail
Hauptbahnhof is the city's Central Station.
European Rail offers transport to all the World Cup destinations.
By road
From Hamburg or Cologne, choose the A 1. If driving from the west (Holland) or the east (Berlin, Poland, Baltic States) choose the A 2. If travelling by private car, you'll find information on the German motorway network at autobahn-online.de.
All main German cities are serviced by Eurlolines and tickets can be purchased at Deutsche Bahn (representative agents), which you'll find in main railway stations.
